Four ways to make your church blog work for you
People are blogging about anything and everything these days — fashion blogs, food blogs, news blogs, travel blogs, parenting blogs, education blogs, the list goes on. Never has it been easier or cheaper to get your written message out for the world to read. At Gospel Powered, we think church blogs are awesome, and when used well, can be so beneficial to your church and its mission. Here are four ideas your church can put into practice to maintain a healthy, active blog.
1. Blogging + social media = endless possibilities
Blogs and social media go hand in hand. Once a blog post is published, it just takes a few clicks, likes and comments for your humble blog post to be gaining international traffic. Using Facebook or Twitter to share blogs is a way to not only get more exposure, but to engage your church outside of a Sunday gathering. Once a blog is written, make sure you link to it from whatever social media platforms you’re running, and encourage a call-to-action from those who will see it. Invite your church to like, share and comment — this increases traffic, and therefore increases exposure and church engagement.
2. Go deeper from Sunday
The trouble with sermons is pastors only get 30–40 (or 50 at a pinch) minutes to say everything they wanted to say. If your church takes questions after the service (and we think it should!), you’re still so limited by time. Blogs are a great way to further expound on what was said, answer any questions that were unanswered on Sunday, and follow topics or tangents that were illuminated during the sermon. The preacher should also make a habit of referring to the blog during the sermon. Are you going to blog more on Sunday’s topic during the week? Then tell the church about it! Remind your church to “check out the blog to find out more about [insert topic here]”. Referring to your church’s blog or social media platforms during the sermon is a great way to continue engaging your church throughout the week.
3. Promote church events
Use persuasive blogs to highlight to your church why they ought to attend your next camp/men’s event/kids’ club/etc. A brochure or advertisement only gets you so far — often, people need to be persuaded to attend an event. We can’t just assume that because we’re running an event, people will turn up. A church blog can be used to further explain the benefits of the event you’re running and what to expect. Use your blog to convince people to prioritise your next church event.
4. Respond to world events
As Christians, we should be informed about what is going on in the world around us, and be ready with a response when we are faced with questions about God and his world. The next time you hear about a major news story, crisis, event or proclamation, use your blog to provide a Christian response, reflecting on how Jesus shapes and makes sense of the world around us.
If your church isn’t blogging, why not give it some thought? Starting a blog may seem daunting, but busy pastors needn’t fear about what seems like just another task on their ever-growing to-do list. Start small, aim for once per week, it doesn’t need to be an essay — just 450–600 words is perfect. Write about what you’re preaching on. Write a response to a question you received. Write about how Jesus has made life amazing this week. Write about what God taught you in his Word. Write about what you’re thankful for. Write about your next event. Write about what God has revealed to you in your sermon preparation. And don’t forget to share it on Facebook!!
